The great Greek philosopher Aristotle said, “Good habits formed in our youth make all the difference.” So, where are our kids going to develop these healthy self-directed habits that will just naturally flow effortlessly for the rest of their lives? Well, our kids are going to establish self-directed healthy habits right here, right now, with us, their parents. We’re going to stop waiting on our children and teach them to be active participants in the creation of their own healthy self-directed habits through the dual powers of routine and choice.
We’ll start by bringing our kids grocery shopping with us, so they see where the food comes from, and how much it costs, as well as develop some ownership in picking the food out within our pre-set limited number of healthy choices. Food that we buy and prepare ourselves always seems to taste a little better, which results in fewer temper tantrums and less wasted food. Our food shopping trips, food preparation, and eating habits will eventually become vital success habits and skills for our kids as they make their journey from childhood into adulthood.
Next, let’s encourage our kids to physically play rather than just sit docile in front of the television and/or electronics. Childhood is the most natural time to play, be active, and fit. If our kids don’t do this as kids, what chance will they have to do it as adults? We all know how busy we get carrying on our shoulders all of those responsibilities of a parent. And we also know how easy that middle-age weight comes creeping up on us. We too were once skinny little teenagers. So, let’s help our kids stay lean and fit.
Now, as my Granddaddy always said, “Go learn, lead, and lay the way to a better world for all of us.” We have the power to parent healthier kids. So let’s do it by helping them to develop some self-directed healthy habits. Aristotle would definitely approve of this kind of parenting. And once again parents, thanks in advance for all that you do, and all that you will do…
