If you are like many people, then your parenting skills were learned by the way you were raised by your parents or guardians. Parenting children is a rewarding yet difficult task, and it is not always easy to find the right balance between love, discipline and encouragement in order to raise a healthy and happy child.

Certain parenting issues, such as nurturing your child’s self esteem, are influenced a great deal by the amount of time that you spend with them; however, it is quality time that is most important. With the busy lifestyles that many adults face today, many are usually thinking about the next thing that needs to be done rather than focusing directly on the child. Parents need to keep in mind that not being in tune with your child’s concerns, dreams, fears etc. will often lead to unsatisfactory child behavior, if they feel they are not getting enough attention.

When parenting children it is very easy to make them become what is called parent deaf, since statistics tell us that we make over 1800 compliance requests of them on a daily basis. This is because we tend to yell and nag rather than using actions, yet in many situations actions do work better than words. For example, when raising a child, instead of constantly telling them to unroll their dirty socks before throwing them in the hamper, simply don’t wash them until they have learned to unroll them before putting them in with the dirty clothes.

Good parenting includes giving your children a way to feel some power; otherwise they will usually find ways to get it themselves, usually with unwanted results. One way to do this is to give them choices. For example, you should insist that they keep their own room neat and tidy, or help with some aspect of cooking daily meals. Do not do a job or chore for them even it is less hassle for you, as this can make them feel unimportant or worthless. Also, if a child is testing the waters or throwing a temper tantrum, then the best thing to do is to leave the room and tell them where you will be when they are ready to calm down and try again.

The experts suggest that when parenting children you let natural consequences occur, as this will help them to avoid some problems in the future. When raising children, if you interfere in the consequences it will not help them to avoid the same situation in the future. If your child forgets their lunch money the experts suggest that you do not take them lunch, rather you should let them either try to figure out a solution or perhaps do without for the day as a way for them to remember it the next time.
